What does a website cost? The price factors at a glance

By Marcus B. Holzhauer · 15 October 2026 · Last updated on 16 October 2026

The most important price factors

  • Scope: One page or 50? More pages mean more planning, content and testing.
  • Design: A custom-designed site costs more than an adapted template, but looks more distinctive.
  • Features: Contact form, appointment booking, online shop, multilingual support, integrations.
  • Content: Text, photos, videos: supply them yourself or have them created?
  • Findability: Technical and content foundations for search engines.
  • Support: One-off, or ongoing with maintenance and further development.

What matters in a quote

A good quote states the services, scope, schedule and price. It describes what is not included and sets out how changes are handled.

Cheap is rarely good value

Very low prices often mean templates without a concept, missing text or unresolved rights. A website is a tool that is meant to bring in enquiries. What matters is what it achieves over a year, not just what it costs.

Sample calculation: where the money goes

As an illustration, a freely chosen example rather than a price list: a business wants a website with eight pages, a contact form and its own design. The effort is spread roughly across concept and page structure, design, programming, text and images, technology for search engines, and testing and launch. If you supply the text and photos yourself, you save on the content item, but you have to allow time for it. In our experience the effort for text is underestimated: good text does not get written on the side, and missing content is one of the most common reasons for late launches.

Ongoing costs that are often forgotten

  • Domain and hosting: recurring every year.
  • Maintenance and security updates: indispensable, especially for systems with extensions, see maintenance and security.
  • Licences: some extensions, fonts or image libraries cost money every year.
  • Changes and new pages: Clarify whether you can maintain these yourself or whether every change is charged for.

Questions you should ask every provider

  1. Who owns the design, text and images once I have paid?
  2. Can I move the site to another provider later?
  3. How many rounds of corrections are included?
  4. What happens if the project is delayed because content is missing?
  5. What follow-on costs arise in the second year?

Common mistakes in budget planning

  • Looking only at the one-off price: If you leave out hosting, maintenance and further development, you pay later.
  • Not defining the scope: Without a clear list of pages, a project grows bit by bit, and prices are hard to compare. Ask all providers to quote against the same list of pages.
  • Clarifying content late: Text and images produced only after the build force changes to the layout and structure.
  • Not stating goals: A site that is meant to generate enquiries is built differently from a plain online business card. Both are legitimate, but they cost different amounts.

How to compare quotes fairly

Place two or three quotes side by side and check the same points: number of pages, number of correction rounds, copywriting, images, technical foundations for search, data protection components, training in maintenance. A higher price is justified if more is included; a lower price is no advantage if you later have to buy the same services separately.

Template or custom: a decision aid

An adapted template is suitable if your offer is simple, you hardly need to differentiate yourself from the competition and the budget is tight. A custom design is worthwhile if trust and recognition are decisive for sales, for instance with services that need explaining or with higher order values. The choice of system also affects the cost; our guide WordPress or custom-built can help with this.
