Meta Keywords: Why This Field No Longer Matters

By Marcus B. Holzhauer · 15 October 2026 · Last updated on 16 October 2026

What the meta keywords tag was

In the past, websites could store a list of search terms in the source code. Because this was abused on a massive scale, Google gave up using the field for ranking. Google has confirmed this publicly itself.

Should I remove it?

It does no harm, but it achieves nothing. You can safely leave it out and use the time for more important things.

What to maintain instead

  • Title tag: The main topic and the brand, roughly 50 to 60 characters.
  • Meta description: A short incentive to click, roughly 150 to 160 characters.
  • Headings: One main heading, with structured sections beneath it.
  • Content: The complete answer to the search question.

You will find instructions under Writing a title tag and Writing a meta description.
